The U.S. Food and Drug Administration announced recalls of Kowalski Simply Sides – Jack’s Potato Salad by Hamtramck, Michigan-based Home Style Foods, Inc. as well as Ice Cream Sandwiches and Gelato by Fort Myers, Florida-based Belgian Yummies, citing the presence of undeclared allergens.
Kowalski Simply Sides – Jack’s Potato Salad contains undeclared egg, while Ice Cream Sandwiches and Gelato contains Wheat, Soy, Egg, Coconut and/or Peanuts, and FD&C Yellow #5 allergens.
Home Style Foods’ recall involves 43 cases of 16 oz Deli Cup of Kowalski Simply Sides – Jack’s Potato Salad with UPC: 754721282701 and sell by date of 04/29/2024. The back label containing the Nutrition Facts and Ingredients is incorrectly labeled as “Very Berry Strawberry”, in a 16oz round plastic deli cup.
The product was distributed in Michigan to 25 stores including 21 Kroger locations, Diamond Dot Market, Holiday Market Royal Oak, Larry’s Foodland, and Tenuta’s Market.
The recall was initiated after it was found that the incorrect label was applied to the back of the product during the filling of the cups. The error was discovered by Quality Assurance during routine documentation review.
Further, Belgian Yummies’ recall involves 4-ounce packages of Ice Cream Sandwiches and 5-liter containers and 4.75-liter pans of Gelato.
Belgian Yummies sandwiches in flavors of Vanilla, Chocolate, Raspberry, Salted Caramel, Key Lime, and Peanut Butter contain undeclared wheat, soy, egg, coconut, and/or peanuts. Further, Sofra Sandwiches in flavors of Vanilla and Chocolate and Ria Sandwiches in flavors of Vanilla contain undeclared wheat, soy, egg, and coconut.
In addition, Belgian Yummies Gelato, Strawberry flavor, contains undeclared FD&C Yellow #5; while Birthday Cake flavor contains undeclared wheat and FD&C Yellow #5; and Horchata flavor contains undeclared wheat.
The sandwiches come in a 4-ounce, clear plastic or gold package marked with an expiration date of 08/31/2024. The Strawberry and Birthday Cake gelato comes in a 5-Liter gray container and the Horchata gelato comes in a 4.75-Liter gray pan marked with an expiration date of 08/31/2024.
The recalled Ice Cream Sandwiches and Gelato were distributed in Florida through wholesale orders. Any of the products were available for retail sale.
The recall was initiated after Belgian Yummies and the Florida Department of Agriculture discovered during an inspection that the product was distributed in packaging that did not reveal the presence of these allergens. The problem was caused by outdated labels being used during the packaging process.
The company corrected the labels immediately, and provided ingredient lists to all wholesale customers who received the affected products.
People who have an allergy or severe sensitivity to these undeclared allergens may get serious or life-threatening allergic reaction if they consume these products.
However, both companies have not received reports of any illnesses related to the recalled products so far.
Customers with allergy or sensitivity who have purchased the affected products are urged to dispose of them or return to their place of purchase for a full refund.
In similar recalls citing undeclared allergens, Portland, Oregon-based Oregon Spice Co. recently called back Johnny’s Parmesan Garlic Seasoning 5oz for sesame, and St. Louis, Missouri-based Baron Spices, Inc. recalled Blues Hog Sweet & Savory Seasoning for soy and wheat.
