A trailer released by Warner Bros. for Joker: Folie à Deux, the sequel to the 2019 psychological thriller Joker, features Lady Gaga as henchwoman Harley Quinn.
“I’m nobody,” Gaga’s Harley tells Joaquin Phoenix’s Arthur Fleck in the trailer, as a version of Hal David and Burt Bacharach’s 1965 classic “What the World Needs Now Is Love” plays in the background. “I haven’t done anything with my life like you have.”
The trailer also features visuals of several musical moments in addition to the “What the World Needs Now Is Love” song. Steve Coogan’s character is heard saying, “We use music to make us whole, to balance the fractures within ourselves,”
In a scene with Coogan, Phoenix acknowledges his relationship with Harley Quinn, saying, “I’ll tell you what’s changed: I’m not alone anymore.”
The Todd Phillips-directed film also stars Zazie Beetz, Catherine Keener and Brendan Gleeson.
Variety previously said the film is “mostly a jukebox musical” that integrates at least 15 reinterpretations of “very well-known songs” and could contain one or two original soundtrack songs as well. It added that the film is expected to “break the mold of traditional musicals.”
Joker: Folie à Deux is set to premiere in cinemas on October 4.
