John Oates Says He's 'Moved On' From Hall & Oates

April 18, 2024

John Oates has revealed that after months of litigation with Daryl Hall, he is moving on from the band with which he has been a part for half-a-century.

Hall & Oates was an American pop rock duo formed in Philadelphia in 1970. Daryl Hall was generally the lead vocalist; John Oates primarily played the electric guitar and provided backing vocals. The two wrote most of the songs they performed.

They achieved their greatest fame from the mid-1970s to the late 1980s with a fusion of rock and roll, soul music, and rhythm and blues.

“As far as I’m concerned, I’ve moved on. I feel like I have a new lease on my creative life,” Oates said in an interview with Rolling Stone.

However, he made it clear that he is always open for continuing his relationship with Hall as friends in the future.

Hall filed a lawsuit against Oates last November to block him from selling his share in the duo’s publishing to Primary Wave Music. He won the legal fight by obtaining a temporary restraining order.

Despite the separation, Oates has only good words for Hall, calling him “an amazing individual.”

“He is one of the great, great songwriters of all time, and without a doubt, one of the great singers of all time. I would never say anything negative about him,” Oates said. “But we have a different strategy for our lives, and we have a different strategy for our business lives as well as our personal lives.”

He added, “And that’s that, so be it. We’re old guys. We deserve to be allowed to do whatever we want to do.”
