A seven-foot bronze statue of the late Lemmy Kilmister, the founder of Motorhead, is set to be erected in his hometown in Staffordshire, England.
The sculpture, made from Staffordshire clay and designed by well known sculptor Andy Edwards, will be erected in Market Place in Burslem. Edwards created the world-famous Beatles statue on Liverpool’s waterfront.
According to reports, the Stoke-on-Trent City Council has approved the proposal for the erection of the statue despite concerns from police about the potential for “good-natured but potentially incident generating attention.”
The nod from the council came after Edwards agreed to increase the height of the statue’s plinth from 2.5m to 3m, following police concerns.
The plinth will be made from sandstone and will include the Motohead logo as well as personal and career details about Lemmy.
The statue is estimated to cost about £50,000 and a fundraising campaign has been launched to raise the necessary funds. A total of £4,512 has reportedly been contributed to a Go Fund Me campaign.
Lemmy, who founded Motorhead in 1975, was its lead singer and bassist until he passed away in December 2015.
